    Modern Music Dan

A vast, sprawling monster of a prog-rock album that ultimately saw front-man Peter Gabriel leaving the band after a disastrous American tour, nonetheless this double-album captures the group at its most daringly (and oft-times somewhat impenetrably) ambitious. Whilst the live tour is now notorious for having been riddled with technological glitches, and for doing what no tour ought to do – present new, unfamiliar material before the record is released to audiences expecting well-loved favourites (one can’t really say ‘hits’ in the context of prog rock…) – the album’s depiction of a Puerto Rican’s odyssey of self-fulfilment contains gems such as the mesmerising ‘Carpet Crawlers,’ the lulling hymn to the joys of the Mellotron (Silent Sorrow in Empty Boats) and the strutting ‘Lilywhite Lillith.’ Essential listening for prog-rock heads and Genesis afficionados…
